The term load-bearing describes a structure (such as a wall) which is holding the weight of another structure. For example, in houses certain walls are load-bearing which means they hold the weight of the upper level on them. The problems tat could occur include if you wanted to take down said wall you would need to find another way to support the house, such as adding a beam.
