The Battle ended in a physical lose to the allied Greece forces of about 7 thousand men lead by King Leonidas who held of the Persian invasion force for around 6 days about half of which were battle days however a disgruntled local betrayed the Greeks to the Persian by telling them of a small mountain pass that allowed the Greeks to be flanked. Upon hearing this Leonidas ordered a full retreat while he and a rear guard of around 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, 400 Thespians and an odd assortment of more local troops stayed to allow the rest of the force to retreat and warn the rest of Greece of the Persian's advance. The Battle of Thermopylae ended in the death of King Leonidas and his rear guard as well as a significant blow to the Persians numbers and moral. It also galvanized the rest of Greece to victory.

Which identifies a major Russian victory on the eastern front during World War I?
zaharov [31]

Correct answer:  The Brusilov Offensive

Explanation:

I'll give more details about the Brusilov Offensive momentarily. First let's dispense with the other choices of World War I battles:

  • The Battle of Tannenburg was a huge loss for Russia.  The battle resulted in the near destruction of the Russian Second Army.  The Scond Army's commander, General Alexander Samsonov, committed suicide, knowing that the tsar would hold him responsible for the devastating loss.
  • The Gallipoli Campaign was an Ottoman victory in Turkish territory, over forces of Britain and France.
  • The Battle of the Somme was fought in French territory between British and French forces against the Germans,

About the Brusilov Offensive:

Named for the Russian commander in charge, General Aleksei Brusilov, the Brusilov Offensive was a major Russian attack against the Central Powers on the Eastern Front.  The offensive began on June 4, 1916 and lasted into September.  It was a great victory for the Russians, but came at a tremendous cost of at least 500,000 casualties.  The Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire) suffered even more losses, with around a million casualties.
