Africa was an unknown territory from 1880-1920. Europeans wanted to gain power and explore and conquer these lands. When one European country found the benefits of claiming the land, the others didn’t want to lose power and started doing the same. That’s when the “Scramble for Africa” began. European countries and the United States needed to come into an agreement and rules for colonization. These created conflict between the countries and the people of Africa.
