People were suffering because there was an industrial mobilization to convert production of civilian consumer goods to war materials. This caused a rationing program, each citizen had a limited fair share, prices control started and labor shortages concerned people.
This led to a Republican win in the midterms, the Congress controlled the home front agenda, in 1944 Congress passed new taxes to help fund the war expenses, the GI Bill to make a social reform program.
