Assuming you're referring once again to the Medieval Period, the main reason why the church and religious life had such great appeal at this point in history was that there was very little scientific understanding of the way things in life "worked"--meaning that people relied on faith and an invisible hand of the Divine to explain why many of life's great mysteries occurred.
