Grant lived in the second half of the 19th Century and participated in Civil War, not American revolution.
He graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1843 and joined the North Army when the American Civil War broke out. He soon became a brigadier general.
In March 1864, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him commander of the North Forces.
Grant suppressed the forces of the South and in the battle of Richmond forced General Lee, commander-in-chief of the forces of the South, to capitulate, ending the war.
In 1868 and 1872 he was elected President of the United States.
