Mary Warren tries to do the right thing in the story, but overall she is so afraid of Abigail that she ends up changing her story and accusing John Proctor. She knows that Abigail has a lot of power over the court, so Mary is ultimately trying to protect herself from being hanged by switching sides and putting the blame on John Proctor.

In The Crucible (1953) by Arthur Miller, John Proctor convinces Mary Warren, the Proctor's servant, to testify against Abigail Williams and to confess that she and the girls have been all pretending. However, taking into account Abigail's power over the court, she starts to fear Abigail will accuse her of being a witch. When the day comes, Mary Warren realizes about how capable Abigail is to turn the judges against her and; therefore, she tries to protect herself and her reputation by accusing John Proctor of witchcraft and describing him as the "devil's man" who has tried to take her to the dark side.

I walked down the dark dirt path to a small quaint cottage. The smell of pine trees and the sound of birds filled my senses. The air around me was warm as I walked closer. The picnic table outside was rustic and wooden. I ran my hand across it and it felt bumpy and aged. I imagined picnics with juicy tarts and cobblers that may have happened at this table. The cottage looked vintage like a grandmothers, it laid deep within the woods and was secluded from city life. It was a very peaceful setting.
