The difference between a hyperbole and a metaphor or simile is that, even though it also makes a comparison, hyperbole has a humorous effect caused by an overstatement. Still,  the idea of "melting yourself from the inside out" exaggerates the speaker's eager to eat something to add emphasis to the fact that he/she is actually starving.
