Burning a book is a poem, its is based on an experience of burning a book.
At the same time, the description is minimal... The first stanza opens with a description of a book actually burning.
The mental images of the pages turning black is awesome!!

So for this essay you know that it is definitely not the conclusion. It is not the topic sentence but it is supporting evidence of the topic sentence. It can also be seen as a hook because it is at the beginning of the essay and it catches the reader's attention.

You can say that it is either supporting evidence or a hook. It all depends on what your teacher is looking for. If I was you I would go with supporting evidence.
