History

Both the Russian and French revolutions saw the violent overthrow of a previous leader in a monarchical system. In Russia’s case, the Bolsheviks led by Lenin overthrew Tzar Nicholas II. Robespierre and the French Revolutionaries overthrew King Louis XVI. Both revolutions sought to replace the monarchy with socialist ideals. The famous motto of the French Revolution was “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité” (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity). The Russian Revolution saw an implementation of Marxism, in which the proletariat would achieve liberty by forcing social equality. Fraternity, brotherhood, was seen in the Russian Revolution when the Bolshevik Party tried to encourage the popular reverence toward a central figure (Lenin, Stalin, etc.).
