c. Analyze the effect of General John J. Pershing's decisions to keep United States forces independent rather than integrating them into the European armies.

General John Pershing believed that the allies had only 169 divisions against the 260 Germany divisions and he believed that it was doubtful that the allies could stop the Germans. The Europeans presented the solution of inserting the American military into the British and French units at the company level, it was called “amalgamation”. They believed it would compensate for the inexperience of the American Officers. Pershing did not agree with that because he had an “open warfare” doctrine. This doctrine was not linked to trench warfare as the Europeans were, it restored mobility at the same time it emphasized the American aggressiveness and marksmanship. This way, amalgamation would not be a good idea.
