"Notes of a Native Son" is a collection of essays by African American author James Baldwin. His essays, written during the 1940s and early 1950s, show the lives of black people prior to the civil rights movement. In this story, Baldwin links the story with the relationship he had with his father by discussing race relations in Harlem. In this way, he shows that social events and relationships can have a large impact on the individual and on individual lives, particularly those of African Americans.
