The other shook his head and examined his possession closely. "How do you do it?" he inquired.

A) "Hold it up in your right hand, and wish aloud," said the Sergeant-Major, "But I warn you of the consequences."

B) "Sounds like the 'Arabian Nights,'" said Mrs. White, as she rose and began to set the supper. "Don't you think you might wish for four pairs of hands for me."

C) Her husband drew the talisman from his pocket, and all three burst into laughter as the Sergeant-Major, with a look of alarm on his face, caught him by the arm.

D) "If you must wish," he said gruffly, "Wish for something sensible."

Mr. White dropped it back in his pocket, and placing chairs, motioned his friend to the table. In the business of supper the talisman was partly forgotten, and afterward the three sat listening in an enthralled fashion to a second installment of the soldier's adventures in India.

It's B and C.

In B, Mrs. White tells a joke about the monkey's paw and is kind of mocking it, she doesn't think she could really get 4 pairs of hands from the monkey's paw.

In C, when the family is laughing about how serious the Sargeant Major is about the monkey's paw, it's clear they don't get that it's really dangerous and they don't take it seriously

Which statement best explains how O. Henry's use of third-person narration in "After Twenty Years" affects the story?
Anestetic [448]

Answer: B. It gives O. Henry a way to keep key information about both main characters hidden until the end.

"After Twenty Years" is a short story by O. Henry. It was first published in his anthology The Four Million in 1906.

It tells the story of two friends who due to their separate paths in life have not seen each other in twenty years. However, they have agreed to meet on a particular spot near a restaurant that night. The story has a plot twist near the end, which relies on the author keeping information about the main characters hidden until the end. He does so by means of a third-person narrative.
