Stamp Act - This law came in the wake of the French-Indian war. The war had ended two years earlier but the British had left a standing army in the colonies to counteract the French threat in nearby Canada. The war had also left Britain deeply in debt. This had led to introduction of several revenue laws aimed at raising revenue to offset the debts and sustain the army. In 1764, the British parliament had also introduced the Sugar Act without considering the input of the colonists. These unilateral actions angered the colonists who eventually started demanding autonomy.
