Mannerism was a response to the social changes brought about by the renaissance.

One of the great social changes that the renaissance brought about was the creation of commerce, maritime expansion, the creation of cities and the departure from religious concepts. This reflected a lot in the art, architecture and literature of the time, which presented more cohesive works, with balanced and less elitist elements.

As a way of responding to these changes, "Mannerism" was created, which was an anti-Renaissance artistic movement that started to present works totally outside Renaissance standards and which presented works that were visually distorted, disturbing, exaggerated, but elegant and elite.
