1. Identify a claim made by Jen and explain the reasoning underlying this claim.

English

Answer:

Jen claims that our culture doesn't fully define us - there are many other factors that make us who we are today, including our upbringing, history, psyche, surroundings, etc.

She is talking about Asian-Americans and how differently they raise their children now than they used to in the past. Although there are still 'stereotypical' Asian parents who want their children to become doctors and scientists, there are also those who support their children's dreams of becoming athletes and following another path than the one their parents set for them. She talks about Jeremy Lin on one hand, and her brother Bob on another - Lin's parents supported his athletic career wholeheartedly whereas her parents wanted Bob to become a doctor, despite his obvious athletic skills in lacrosse.

Even though both families come from the same or similar cultures, one son was allowed to become who he truly wanted to be whereas the other one had very stereotypical Asian expectations from his parents.

The discovery that the men we had scorned as peasant guerrillas were, in fact, a lethal, determined enemy and the casualty lists
Aleks [24]

Answer:

The soldiers A) felt that their efforts were not successful.

Explanation:

From the excerpt we are studying here, we can tell that soldiers were mistaken in their first judgment of their enemy. They thought they would easily win over a bunch of "peasant guerrillas" only to find themselves being killed each week. When the narrator says, "the blood being spilled broke our early confidence" he means soldiers now understood their efforts were not being successful.

This excerpt was taken from "A Rumor of War", a memoir by Philip Caputo. Caputo - who joined the war at first for the excitement the danger caused in him and for the ideal of serving his country - soon realized his mistake. Instead of coming back home filled with heroic stories about epic battles, the author says his own story is boring. Battles would last forever, American soldiers would keep on dying while the enemy hid in jungles full of traps and snipers.

Based on Satrapi's graphic novel about her life is pre and post- revolutionary Iran and then in Europe. The film traces growth from child rebellious, punk- loving teenager in Iran. In the background are growing tensions of the political climate in Iran in the 70's and 80's, with members of her liberal- leaning family detained and then executed, and the background of the disastrous Iran/Iraq war.

PLEASE HELP
Grace [21]

The writer use structure and language to persuade her readers and support her feelings about immigration through the thesis as she makes an analogy to the famous "I Have a Dream" speech by Dr. Martin Luther King.

What is a thesis statement?

A thesis statement appears at the conclusion of the introductory paragraph of a paper and it offers a concise summary of the point or claim of the essay, research paper, etc.

We can see this in how the letter is laid out, especially toward the end when the author references that they too, have a dream. We see throughout the letter strong uses of metaphors. She is using her personal experiences to persuade the audience of supporting the DACA program.

She starts by giving examples to support how there are good people who are immigrants in America and that there are people who spew hatred. The author continues to use the letter to provide evidence supporting that deportation is bad.
