PART 2

To understand the purpose of POR and PARA is a challenge. In Spanish, POR and PARA are not only equivalent to for, but also by, on, through, because of, in exchange for, in order to, among others. So, to know how to use one or another, we need to examine the use of each preposition. Therefore:

1. Esta llave es para el carro nuevo.

Para is used for goals and purposes as in this example. So, here the key (llave) is used for one purpose, that is, the new car.

2. Tenemos que hacer la tarea para mañana.

Para is also used to talk about deadlines that includes date and times. So, the homework is for tomorrow.

3. A mi madre le encantan las frutas, por ejemplo, el mango.

Por ejemplo is a common phrase in Spanish and means for example.

4. Para mí, la tecnología es una maravilla.

Para mí is a common phrase in Spanish and means for me.

5. Eduardo está enfermo; por eso no vino a clase hoy.

Por eso is a common phrase and means that's why

6. Ayer estuve en el cibercafé por tres horas.

Por is used to talk about duration, that is, the lapse of time an activity took place.

PART 3

In this exercise, we also need to fill in the blanks with the correct use of PARA and POR

1. José: Ahora Alejandro García juega para los tigres.

We use the preposition para to indicate the team a person plays for. So, Alejandro García plays for the tigres.

2. Tomás: Sí, lo sé. No me gusta ese jugador. Creo que sólo juega para tener dinero.

Here para is used to indicate a purpose. It's very common to use para with an infinitive verb indicating the reason why something is done. So, Tomás says that Alejandro Garcia only plays for the love of money.

3-4. José: Es verdad. ¿Sabes qué? Ayer vi en la tele que Alejandro se lastimó el pie. Por eso, víctor trujillo va a jugar por él en el partido de mañana.

Por eso is a phrase that was explained above.

5. Tomás: Víctor sí que es un jugador excelente. Además juega por el amor al deporte.

Por is used here to talk about motivation whereby you do something.

PART 4

In this exercise, we need to write sentences using POR or PARA with the information provided, using the present tense. In Spanish, the simple present tense (el presente or el presente de indicativo) is used to talk about habitual actions or routines.

1. Héctor / trabajar / los miércoles / la noche

Hector trabaja los miércoles por la noche

Por is used in common phrases as por la noche (at night), por la tarde (in the afternoon), por la mañana (in the morning). So, Hector works on Wednesday at night.

2. maribel / manejar / a / cien / kilómetros / hora

Maribel maneja a cien kilómetros por hora

When talking about the speed of an object, we use the word por. So, Maribel drives at 100km/h

3. este / reproductor de mp3 / ser / mi hermano

Este reproductor de mp3 es para mi hermano

We use para when something is for someone. In this case, the mp3 is for my brother.

4. fin / nosotros / encontrar / la autopista

Por fin nosotros encontramos la autopista

Por fin is a common phrase in Spanish and means at last.
