A Priest King is a sacerdotal ruler, which was not the case at all in Constantinopla. When Theodosius I (379-395) ruled, Christianity became the official religion of the empire. The Byzantine Empire distinguished itself from Ancient Rome in that it was oriented to Greek rather than Latin culture and was characterized by orthodox Christianity rather than Roman polytheism. The emperor was no priest.
