Since the beginning of the novel, Bilbo and the dwarves have been in conflict. Thorin, especially, doubted Bilbo's abilities and
the need for him on their journey. Consider Thorin's last words to Bilbo: "There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. But sad or merry, I must leave it now. Farewell!"
