There are three reasons for the growth of representative self-government in the 13 colonies. One of them is the population growth: this allowed cities to be formed and at the same time centers of government appeared. And last but not least, the attempts of the British to control and dominate their colonies: this made the colonies to really want to have a self-government and their citizens to decide who they want to rule over them.
