Initially intended to deal with problems in the United States as a result of independence from Britain declared on July 4, 1776 by amending the Articles of Confederation, it resulted in the drafting and adoption of the Constitution of the United States still in force today. The desire of many participants, including the federalists James Madison and Alexander Hamilton, was indeed to establish a new mode of government rather than simply correcting the one established by the Articles of Confederation.
