Based on the passage from President Franklin D. Roosevelt's first inaugural address, the persuasive technique he used was appeal to emotion. This is because he did not relay any factual information but rather he aimed to gain the people's sympathy. This was evident especially in the statement: "<span>This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper.</span>"

Garrett Hardin argues for a very harsh thesis: we simply should not provide aid to people in poor countries.
