Odysseus learns of humility in the story Polyphemus, which is the 9th story in the narrative. Odysseus considers himself to be more than a simple mortal as he has survived Troy and has been in gods' favor many times, which is why when he tricks the Cyclops Polyphemus, he publicly declares that it was he, Odysseus, who has tricked him, which in turn backfires, as he is punished by Poseidon, Polyphemus' father. We can see that when he presented himself to Polyphemus saying that his name is "Nobody", he eventually won, whereas hubris brought him nothing but harm.
