Japan had an imperial strategy during the 20th century which involved gaining as much land as possible in the Asiatic area. They wanted to be a dominant superpower with their imperialistic tendencies - they were partly successful, as they lost it all following World War II.

War enabled Japan to gain territories from both China and Russia. However, Japan suffered economic problems as
a result of the Great Depression. Due to
the weakness of the parliament, ultranationalist took over the government and
began an imperialistic campaign in Asia that would lead to World War II.
