The meaning of the word "cryptic" in the sentence and the answer to the question above is the following one: mysterious. The Cambridge dictionary defines "cryptic" as mysterious and difficult to understand.  In addition, it indicates that "inscrutable" is a possible synonym for this word since it means not showing emotions or thoughts and therefore very difficult to understand or get to know. Yet, as you can see, it is a bit different.
