During the Russo-Japenese War, Japan and Russia signed a series of agreements over the territories, but Russia broke them and Japan retailed by attacking the Russians. News of repeated Russian losses let to the unrest at home and to a revolt in the midst of the war. World War 1 led to the constant defeats of Russia. More than 4 million Russian soldiers had been killed. It revealed the weaknesses of czarist rule and military leadership.
