Reread lines 38-51. Explain the conflict between Brand and Wetherell
Vladimir79 [104]

The conflict between Mr Myles Brand, the president of the N.C.A.A and Wetherell, a former Florida State football player is enumerated as follows:

By entering into the very divisive topic of Native American nicknames and mascots for collegiate sports teams on Friday, executives of the National Collegiate Athletic Association achieved their declared goal of delivering a strong message that they oppose such images.

However, the NCAA created a cacophony of confusion and put the organization in the potentially awkward position of determining when Native American allusions are "hostile" and "abusive" and when they are not - questions that might take months, and possibly the assistance of the courts, to decide.

Four years after investigating the issue, the NCAA's executive committee stated in February that participation in its own postseason championships would be limited to 18 schools and universities with Native American mascots, nicknames, or other iconography that the NCAA deemed "hostile and abusive."

The NCAA stated that:

(1) such institutions would no longer be permitted to host its national tournaments;

(2) colleges already scheduled to host such events would be required to remove any references to Indian imagery from the arenas or stadiums;

(3) such colleges would be prohibited from bringing mascots, cheerleaders, or any other people or paraphernalia that feature Native American imagery to NCAA championships beginning in 2008; and

(4) athletes may not wear uniforms or other gear with Native American imagery. (The NCAA's actions have no direct impact on bowl games, which it does not regulate, or anything that happens during the regular season.)
