Read this excerpt from Rudyard Kipling's novel Kim in which Kim responds to the lama's questions. Then complete the sentences th
lakkis [162]

The correct answer for the first question: The lama is looking for "The River of the Arrow" because would be option 1. "He thinks he will be purified spiritually when he finds it". This is showed in the excerpt when the lama says "By it one attains freedom from the Wheel of things", meaning he wants to be free of his sins and thinks the river is going to help him achieve it. He does not give a reference as to god being the reason he wants to find the river therefore options 2,3 and 4 are incorrect.

The correct answer for the second question: The excerpt shows that would be option 3. "Kim is eager to show the lama he does not know where the river is located". This is shown in the excerpt when he repeatedly says that he does not know the location, for example " If I knew, think you I would not cry it aloud?". Option 1, 2 and 4 are incorrect because Kim does not appear under the lama's spell, he does listen to him, and has not expressed an interest in the river's powers.

Vaselesa [24]
Much of the traditional Igbo life presented in this novel revolves around structured gender roles. Essentially all of Igbo life is gendered, from the crops that men and women grow, to characterization of crimes. In Igbo culture, women are the weaker sex, but are also endowed with qualities that make them worthy of worship, like the ability to bear children. The dominant role for women is: first, to make a pure bride for an honorable man, second, to be a submissive wife, and third, to bear many children. The ideal man provides for his family materially and has prowess on the battlefield. The protagonist in the novel is extremely concerned with being hyper-masculine and devalues everything feminine, leaving him rather unbalanced. Much of the gender theme in the book centers around the idea of balance between masculine and feminine forces – body and mind/soul, emotionality and rationality, mother and father. If one is in imbalance, it makes the whole system haywire.
