By calling attention to the contrasting ideas that America was founded upon, the writer reinforces her main idea.

Throughout her essay, Anna Quindlen shows the differences between the ideals America was founded upon and what actually happened or is currently happening. One example she uses is the phrase "crown thy good with brotherhood". She then lists the different ways Americans have not acted as a brotherhood. She speaks of slavery, bigotry and racism.
