The Middle Colonies were best for farming for food production. These colonies established farms for what, rye, corn, vegetable, and animal farming. The Southern Colonies were the harshest of environments being hot and humid with swampy land. However, the geography proved perfect for tobacco, rice, sugar, and eventually cotton. The Southern Colonies focused on plantation farming of cash crops and would demand large amounts of labor. The need for labor would be filled by a system of slavery.
