since a simile is where you compare 2 things i imagine the similie would be somwhere were he is talking about the maple tree. "before your could say jack robbison they have gone and grown alot bigger than you ever thought they could"
i had some trouble looking for it and thats all that makes sense for the similie i belive.
The first one means that you tried to stop feeling nervous or you tried to swallow so much that you couldn't.
The second one means that you are getting more nervous, or anxious.

I would say an unreliable narrator because that kind of narrator is the best at keeping secrets from the reader. If that's not an option, then a restricted narrator because they only know a limited amount of information.
