c. slaves were often experienced violent punishment for breaking rules

when they broke the ruled slaves would get whipped, beaten, any debt which was owed to the slave owner piled higher and they worked longer and harder to pay that off but back then debt was almost impossible for a slave to get rid of. Hope this helps!

It caused Lincoln's election in 1860 and fueled the movement to secession and war. Slavery was the dividing point over which there was a limit to the compromises that could be effected. It clearly drove the decade as it had shaped the whole century.
