As you go up in the troposphere, the pressure decreases simply because there is less air above you. A change of pressure cause  change of temperature. It is called, the adiabatic effect. If you blow hard on your hand, it will feel cool. This is because the air was compressed by your lungs, then came out of your mouth into a lesser pressure.
