New England colonies were founded to be new communities for religious separatists whereas the Southern colonies were created as business colonies to make money for Great Britain.

The Southern Colonies included Virginia, the Carolinas, and Maryland. Once it is discovered the ground was fertile for tobacco growth, the colonies were used to expanded tobacco plantations. Other cash crops were added to the Southern Colonies as more land was acquired. Religion was not a big priority in the colonies compared to New England colonies where religion was the focus of the whole society. The government was run by religious elders and rules of the community were dictated by the church.
