Benjamin Banneker was a brilliant, self-taught African-American astronomer and mathematician.

In a letter to Thomas Jefferson, he points at the contradiction between the high ideas incorporated into the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, and the persistence of slavery.  Banneker used religioius arguments against racial opression, stating that all men are created equal by God.
