During that period there was a serious confront of the state’s rights and federal government, many created the motto “Liberty first and Union afterward”. President Jackson explained his position on a public dinner <em>“Our Union: it must be preserved. The Union, next to our liberty, the most dear; may we all remember that it can only be preserved by respecting the rights of the States and distributing equally the benefit and burden of the Union”.</em>
