Even though Johnson claims to be short on time by saying, “Oh honey, I can’t hardly stay a minute,” her actions belie her actual situation.  Even though she seemingly declines the pie and milk, she takes it, and not the least bit reluctantly.  In fact, it is stated that she accepts the food “easily,” which is why it is not too difficult to discern she really has plenty of time to spend gossiping.
