The formation of d i k e occurs when there is a preexisting layer or layers of rock, and magma from bellow managed to either fill in a crack, or to melt the rocks and cut through them. The magma then starts to solidify once it stops its movement upwards, and as it does it forms intrusive igneous rock mass.

The d i k e is often vertical, or nearly vertical, while the rest of the rock layers are horizontal, so it looks like it has literary cut through them.
