After the California Gold Rush that started in 1848, the waves of people (Called the forty-niners) looking to get rich quickly arrived, and by 1849, they have extracted most what was known as "easy gold".

After this period, the mineral's extraction was far harder and required more destructive and elaborated methods. This situation benefited wealthier individuals that opted to form massive corporations in order to get the most out of the mines.

The result of the birth of these organizations was that they transformed the mining industry by creating large national networks of production and finance.

So the answer is: Corporations.

Which of the following best describes a major effect of Upton Sinclair’s book The Jungle?
anygoal [31]

The correct answer is "It created a controversy that influenced President Roosevelt to take action".

Sinclair's "The Jungle", aimed to win the hearts of Americans and lead their convictions towards socialism. However, the biggest impact the book ended up having on the public, was its criticism of the meatpacking industry and exposure of their unsanitary practices.

Although President Roosevelt was outraged at first, he ended up passing the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act to control the situation. In a public release he stated: "Radical action must be taken to do away with the efforts of arrogant and selfish greed on the part of the capitalist."

Hope this helps!
