In 1784, not long after the end of the Revolutionary War, the Georgia General Assembly authorized the use of 40,000 acres to be used for a school of higher learning. Then, in January of 1785, the General Assembly created the University of Georgia. In February of 1786, the first President of the University of Georgia was chosen: Abraham Baldwin.
