Wernicke's area is the region of general interpretation present in left temporal and parietal lobes. It receives the sensory information from other association areas of sensory functions and is responsible for the interpretation of the meaning of speech. This region recognizes the spoken words and translates the words into the thoughts.

Any damage to Wernicke's area makes the person unable to interpret the written and spoken words. These individuals are also unable to arrange the words in a consistent pattern.  Since Rosemary is unable to understand the spoken words and responds in a vague language, stroke might have affected the Wernicke's area of her brain.
