The Diary of Anne Frank, Act II, Scene 3, Mr. Frank says, "We don't need the Nazis to destroy us. We are destroying ourselves."

This is probably from the stress of hiding and trying to save up on food.  Such conditions probably have stressed out the people in that room that they are now quarreling among themselves.  This is probably true when it comes to food.
