The correct answer is D. The Pilgrims thought they were predestined to succeed. The Pilgirms belonged to a radical strain of Protestantism, and one of its main tenets was a strong belief in predestination. John Calvin, the Swiss reformer, had argued that God had preordained salvation for the blessed, and this condition would manifest itself during their lives. Luther had already argued that salvation was only due to faith and not, as the Catholic Church argued, due to a combination of faith and works. Protestants believed that salvation by works was a way for the Catholic Church to control Christians through the administering of sacraments. Calvin took Luther's idea and took it further, arguing that not only was salvation based on faith alone, but that God already knew who would be saved. The Pilgrims believed that their faith marked them as part of the blessed, that they were predestined for salvation, and this belief made them sure of their success in New England.
