History

People who supported imperialism claimed that it was the natural progression of civilized countries and races to expand. Expansion in a way became a matter of race. Americans were part of the great Anglo-Saxon race, which means that, like their English cousins, they were of a superior race and destined for an empire of their own.

In a half an hour, the fire was over, and 146 of the 500 workers—mostly young women—were dead.

In 1911 a fire broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. The freight elevator jammed and wouldn’t move, and the fire-escape steps collapsed under the weight of people using them. About 60 workers jumped from the 9th floor windows to their death. More than 140 workers died in the incident.
