The american author Iris Chang, in her account of the Nanjing Massacre, also known as "the Ravishment of Nanking", (<em>event occurred over 6 weeks between 1937 and 1938</em>) experienced by Chinese citizens and soldiers under the Japanese army, during <em>the Sino-Japanese War</em>, emphasizes that <em>history must not be forgotten</em>, that by not remembering the past, people become victims of it. Due people in China tend to call it "the Forgotten Holocaust".

Chang illustrates the depths of war, where humans become inhuman, so remembering is the first step in repairing the damage of a holocaust.

Chang also highlights the heroism of certain soldiers sacrificing their lives to save the Chinese form the Japanese Army, and shares accounted details about the mass execution of captives, about the thousands of women raped by the Japanese soldiers; about the inhumane and barbaric methods of killing invented by the Japanese army, the uncountable number of dead bodies covering the Yangtze River after they've tried to escape by swimming; and so many other numerous atrocities around the city, where the victims were mostly civilians annihilated by Japanese soldiers.

The world knows about this tragedy, because of Iris Chang, a woman who made history by telling it.
