Complete the paragraph about the goals of the members of the Grange.
Irina18 [472]

The Granger movement was started by farmers in the late 1860s to solve the various issues they faced.

  • The major problem faced by the farmers during 1860a was the corporate ownership of railroads and grain elevators. Grain elevators were used for storing crops.
  • The corporations charged high prices for marketing and distribution of agricultural goods and farmer had no other option but to pay the high price.
  • Oliver Husdon Kelly, a former agriculture department employee, formed a group called Patrons of Husbandry to address the farmer's issues, the group was also called Grange. He founded granges all over the country. Men and women could become its members.
  • The Grange helped the farmers in building grain elevators, purchasing machinery, and persuading the government to regulate the shipping fee.

Due to the efforts of the Granger movement,  the public sentiment went against monopolies and it resulted in the passage of the Sherman Act in 1890 which outlawed cartels, monopolies, and trusts.

Hence the correct answers are  b) Railroads charged arbitrary, high prices to transport farm products and b) to regulate the railroads and the prices they set to
