The delivering of weapons, food, and medical supplies to the American troops in Europe was not the easiest thing to do. The European Theater was in chaos, and danger lurked everywhere, so delivering anything to any spot was anything but safe, as a surprise attack was always a possibility. Also, the Atlantic Ocean needed to be crosses, and ti is the second largest body of water on the planet, so it was a long way to go, and plus not cheap at all. The troops were constantly on the move, so that also represented problem, as they were getting more and more into the interior of the continent, so apart from having to deliver things further away, the danger was also increasing as the enemy lines were always close.
The revolutions of 1848 (Known as
Spring of Nations, People's Spring or Springtime of the Peoples in some
countries) were triggered by street protests beginning in Silicy (in January
1948), an autonomous region of Italy. The wave of revolution that swept through
Europe in 1948 is still the most pervasive revolutionary wave in the history of
Europe.
Paul describes how the soldiers are in the midst of a particularly fierce attack. He says, "We have become wild beasts. We do not fight, we defend ourselves against annihilation." Since they have not literally transformed into wild animals, this is a metaphor.
