How does the narrator's role affect the characterization in this excerpt? The narrator's knowledge of soccer allows him to descr
ibe Jay's skills. The narrator's distance allows him to reveal everyone's thoughts. The narrator's friendship with Jay allows him to consider Jay's feelings. The narrator's history allows him to explain Jay's childhood.
Well, the way I see it, the narrator has an inside view of jay's life.
Explanation:
He is very knowledgeable when discussing sports, soccer in particular. So when you listen to his words and imagine the scene playing out in front of you, it's almost as if you're sitting out on the bleachers watching the story unfold out in the real world. Listening to the narrator describe all of jays actions out on the soccer field and making those witty comments that would naturally come from an announcers mouth. And in many cases with just this excerpt alone, he gives you a deeper look into jay's life. He tells you what everyone is thinking, which is another way of him giving you a deeper look into the story. The way the narrator describes an encounter with somebody can tell you right off the bat whether somebody is gonna be a good influence on the story or a bad influence. Its almost as if they give you the look into someone's life through their best friend. Somebody that has been with the main character for all or most of his life. That could be the best explanation as to why the narrator gives us such a close look into jay's life and why he understands him so well. Hence the literal friendship between jay and his narrator. To wrap it up, he gives you an 'in person' point of view. he lets you experience the story with him rather than describe it to you from a third person point of view. Hope this helps! It's just my interpretation.
