In early African society, carved masks were often worn during rituals to honor and remember their ancestors. Scientists and anthropologists have dated some mask from the Paleolithic epoch. Ancient African tribes -in different times- created these masks made of wood, leather, and metal. They wear the masks in their ceremonies, initiations, preparation for war, harvest time, or any special occasion, and dance in their rituals. For them, the ancestors represented a motive of pride and honor. That is why they celebrated them.
