<span>One of the most important accomplishments of the Progressive Era was the Nineteenth Amendment of the Constitution. This amendment gave both sexes the right to vote (women could now vote). Voting can affect family life. One example of this was the temperance movement. It promoted the practice of never drinking alcohol. The point women were trying to make was that alcohol could cause men to waste their money, ignore their families, and abuse their wives. This is why it is important for women to be able to vote.</span>

<span>Dan Pacolke initiated a number of prison initiatives that both made the prisons more sustainable, and also made life in the prison more meaningful for inmates and staff. These initiatives often strove to save money for the prison, while at the same time, improving prison conditions. Pacolke introduced gardening, and things to improve gardening, such as beekeeping and composting. Inmates found working in the garden satisfying, and the healthy food grown in prison gardens nourished the inmates.</span>
Eratosthenes (276-194 BC) was a Greek mathematician and astronomer who made an amazingly close calculation of the actual circumference of the earth. He did it by noting the angle of shadows in two cities during the summer solstice, and then doing geometric calculations that factored in the distance between the cities.
Oh, and besides math and astronomy, Eratosthenes was also a poet and music theorist, as well as pretty much inventing the field of study we call geography today. He was what we would call a "polymath" (a person of knowledge of all sorts of things) -- or, what the Greeks called a <span>Πένταθλος (pentathlos).</span>
